We've been operating out of the city since 1998, so we have a long well established history here, and are quite familiar with the area. Krakow is Poland's second largest city, and home to over 750,000 people. There are several different commonly accepted spellings of the city name, such as Krakow, Cracow, Krakau, or Cracovie. The official Polish spelling of the city name is Kraków, with an accented ó, and is pronounced as Krakuf. The city is generally regarded as the cultural capital of Poland, due mostly to it's ancient and extremely rich history. It's home to Poland's most prestigious academic institution, Jagiellonian University, which has many noteworthy alumni such as Nicolaus Copernicus, Pope John Paul II, King John III Sobieski, and many others. The city is also home to many ancient tourist attractions, such as the Sukiennice and Main Market Square, St. Mary's Basilica, Collegium Maius, or Wawel Castle. Krakow also features many large scale annual cultural events, and as a result draws northward of seven million total tourists per year.
Krakow is a very old city, having been granted it's official city rights on June 5, 1257. It served as the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596. Despite the city's official age, settlement of the area dates well back to before Jesus Christ, and well into the Paleolithic Age. Many ancient artifacts from this time period have been recovered from Wawel Hill, such as flint and bone tools, many of which are on display at various Krakow based museums. There have also been many ancient pagan temples uncovered, with one of them having been found buried deep beneath the foundation of Wawel Castle. A new museum as been built underground, where you are able to walk through this pagan structure, and imagine what life might have been like for humans hundreds of years ago. Modern Poles did not arrive to the area until the 7th century, when the Western Slavic tribe of Lechitians settled in the region, and displaced or absorbed all of the other settlers.
With regard to the city's weather, it is considered to be a temperate climate. The average summer temperature usually falls around 67 degrees Fahrenheit, or 20 degrees Celsius, however it's not uncommon to have temperatures peak at 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or 33 degrees Celsius. Average winter temperatures generally fall round 28 degrees Fahrenheit, or -2 degrees Celsius, making Krakow somewhat of a cold place to live from December through February. When it comes to rain, Krakow receives about 25 inches of precipitation annually, or roughly 630 mm. The wettest months of the year occur from June through August, with Krakow being home to frequent summer thunderstorms.
